Tuesday Tips - What to do with all these digital photos?

Here are some tips on how to preserve your digital pictures for a long time, how to save money by putting them directly in a book, how to get free prints, and how to order the right size prints.

Do you take digital photos? What do you do with them?

I know some people that keep them on their computer. They can only share them with you if you sit next to them and let them fire their machine up, then fiddle around a while to find the right folders, then tell you to move over and now you can see them - hundreds of them.

I know others who keep them on camera chips and just buy more chips/cards. They'll show you lovely pictures on a tiny camera screen.

Did you know that a computer hard drive has an expected life of about five years?

If you like your photos enough to share them, or to look at them yourself years from now, then a better solution would be to put them in a photobook or to print them out (and maybe put them in an album).

Photobooks like Creative Memories' Storybooks are beautiful and can be really easy. Click here to download a free version of Storybook Creator software (PC only). Two things I like about Storybooks are that I can order multiple copies for family members, and that I don't have to pay to process my photos. If I come back from a big vacation with hundreds of photos, that saves a lot of money!

Or you can print your photos out at CM's Digital Center, from your computer, and they'll arrive in the mail. Use my ID number, 67552025, to get your first 20 prints free! (I paid about $2 for shipping when I ordered mine.)

I've ordered prints from the Digital Center and really liked the quality. But I want to share the lesson that I learned: digital photo files are a different size (ratio) from film photos. You get to choose which size you want, such as 4xD or 4x6. Cameras may be different, but for most, 4x6 means you'll have to crop the picture just a little on top and bottom. I made the mistake of mixing my pictures - when they arrived, the 4xDs were just a little fatter, and I ended up having to trim them so they would slide into a PicFolio album. So from now on I will probably crop them all (on the Digital Center site) and order all 4x6s.
